A Bit More Space Each Day?

Tom & Mark Pic - Spacemakers Think 2013

Space can mean different things to different people.

Literal thinkers might imagine clearing one’s calendar, rearranging the house or leaving it all behind to bask in the Bahamas. Others think metaphorically, imagining time to ponder, to laugh freely, clear one’s head or simply do nothing.

If you’re anything like me, I find the concept of space incredibly attractive.

I live a rich but complex life, juggling multiple roles, projects, family responsibilities, bills and busyness. In the real world, I don’t have the luxury (or desire) to escape overseas for 6 months each year. Yet I do know the power of making space in work and in life, through doing everyday things well.

A few months ago, I asked myself what I’d do if I gained just a bit more space each day. Not hours. Just 20 or 30 minutes a day. Here’s what I wrote in my journal:

I’d like to walk more slowly. To arrive early. To breath deeply. To daydream more often. To go to sleep a bit earlier. To read that extra book to my kids. To have more energy for friends. To listen more. To pray more. To not feel rushed.

These aren’t big things in the scheme of life, but they have meant a lot to me.

If you had just a bit more space each day, what would you do with that time?

  1. I would do things properly the first time. I would organise one cupboard or space a day. I would help my children do things themselves rather than doing it for them. I would think first before acting. I would knit, I would garden, I would read, I would exercise and I would pray.

  2. To me space means being outside somewhere by myself …. the golf course ….. an oval …. driving somewhere. I make time to find that space as it tends to put things in perspective and problems or issues or full inboxes seem much less significant …. 🙂

  3. I would breathe more slowly and practice more mindfulness and meditation. I would read more and spend more time on the floor playing with my kids. I would love to find enough free time to walk my dog on the beach everyday.
